Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)?

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a test that examines internationally qualified registered nurses and midwives who want to practice as registered nurses and midwives in Australia. The purpose of the examination is for applicants to demonstrate their knowledge, abilities, and judgment in a context as similar as feasible to the clinical experiences they would encounter as Australian nurses and midwives.

– Competence in a specific area of clinical practise.

– A comprehensive approach to patient care management skillset.

– The ability to think clearly and provide treatment that is individualised to each patient.

– Being able to conduct a clinical evaluation and formulate a treatment strategy based on the results is a crucial skill.

– The ability to always guarantee patient safety.

– Effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills.

The OSCE test consist of ten clinical scenarios designed to examine individuals in accordance with the NMBA Registered Nurse/Midwives Standards for Practice.

It is a regulatory, rather than an educational OSCE. It incorporates uniformity for all applicants, which means that the examiners will not coach, prompt, or provide additional explanations of responsibilities or findings to the candidate. Each candidate will be tested on a series of practical skills, these may include but are not limited to:

1.   Physiological observations

2.   Vital signs

3.   Calculating drug dosages

4.   Subcutaneous/ Intramuscular injection

5.   Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT)

6.   In hospital resuscitation

7.   Safe disposal of sharps

8.   Medication administration

9.   Wound care

10.  Hand hygiene

11.  Therapeutic patient communication/consent

12.  Infection control practices

13.  Patient identification

14.  Intravenous therapy administration/management

15.  Risk management in the clinical environment

16.  Communication Skills

After passing the MCQ, the IQNM dashboard will notify you that you are eligible to take the OSCE, and you will be instructed to pay the OSCE price. After receiving payment, the IQNM examination staff will notify you with forthcoming OSCE dates.

OSCE costs $4,000 AUD. It will be utilised by AHPRA in the operation and maintenance of OSCE.

Regardless of the cause, the OSCE cost is non-refundable, but you may reschedule your exam with IQNM (International Qualified Nurses and Midwives) exam committee.

It is required that you need to contact exam committee IQNMexams@ahpra.gov.au  or on 1300 419 495 a minimum of 72hrs (3 full business days) prior to your allocated exam date and time.

On November 20, 2023, AHPRA announced plans to expand assessment capabilities for overseas-trained nurses and midwives by establishing a new centre in Melbourne. This center aims to expedite the assessment of clinical skills, reducing wait times for professionals seeking to practice in Australia. Previously, individuals with relevant but non-equivalent qualifications had to travel to South Australia for assessments. The introduction of a second assessment site is expected to strengthen Australia’s healthcare workforce, especially following a substantial increase in internationally qualified nurses and midwives registered to work in the country last year. The initiative is set to begin in the second quarter of 2024.

If you live outside of Australia, you must come to Australia to take the OSCE examination. Furthermore, the candidate is responsible for booking his or her own travel arrangement, including accommodation.

The exam will last roughly 3.5 hours. It might be the morning or the afternoon.

There are ten individual stations will be allocated to each candidate. The time frame for each station is 10 minutes:

Two (2) minutes-Reading time outside of the exam room

Eight (8) minutes-Performance time inside of the room

As soon as possible (often within 6 weeks) after the exam date, candidates will get an email containing their exam results. If you have successfully completed OSCE, you will be able to apply for registration and the instructions for doing so will be available in your IQNM dashboard.

After receiving their OSCE results, unsuccessful candidates can apply to repeat the exam. Before moving on to the next step of the OSCE, they need to make sure the next OSCE fee has been paid in full using the IQNM dashboard. As soon as the IQNM exam staff is informed of the payment, they will send an email with a booking selection form that will include the next available exam date.

Candidates who pass the OSCE will be asked to submit an application to AHPRA for NMBA registration. Once the results are made public, the candidate’s dashboard will be updated with the procedure’s following steps.

ARHE will provide you with the information and materials you need to become proficient and competent for your OSCE examination. External OSCE preparation programmes are not endorsed by the NMBA or AHPRA.
